Requirement:
The Kaoma Cheshire Home is an orphanage run by the local community and Sr. Mollie Moloney, an Irish Presentation Sister. The Orphanage is supported by Alan Kerins Projects. The Orphanage is home to more than 140 children, aged 6 weeks to 18 years. One section of the orphanage is especially for the babies, who require a different type of care to the older children. These are babies are aged less than two years. Their mothers have died, and their extended family is not able to look after them. Many are HIV positive.
The house that the babies live in has fallen into disrepair because it is built on very sandy soil with inadequate foundations. Engineers have advised Alan Kerins Projects that the site is unsuitable for building; it is on the banks of a river prone to severe flooding. The current building is not in the same compound as the rest of the orphanage. A new site has been acquired adjacent to the rest of the orphanage, on higher ground, which will be incorporated into the same compound, adding to security. It is planned to build a new home for the babies on this small site. This house will have sleeping areas for 25 babies and toddlers. It will also have toilet and washing facilities, sleeping quarters for staff, a kitchen and an outside play area.
