Since 2006, Alan Kerins Projects has supported the expansion of the Kaoma Community School. Highlights include the building of 4 classrooms and a school hall. The school now is a full basic school offering education to Grade 9 standard to over 700 students every year.
Our latest support to the school, which started in July 2010, is the addition of 5 new classrooms and toilet facilities. Two of these classrooms will be converted for specialist use – one as a Science lab, and the other as a Home Economics room. This work will be completed by the end of 2011, following a pause in the building work for the rainy season.
Most of the funding for this project has been sponsored by two private donors.
Funding Required. We are still looking for funding to finish off and fit-out the 5 classrooms with desks, chairs and school supplies in 2011 – the cost is approximately €5,000.
Local Implementing Partner: BuildIT International, is an NGO that trains men and women in building skills, while working on construction projects for local communities. Alan Kerins Projects partners with BuildIT International so that the finished buildings are low cost and low maintenance, while at the same time fully fit for purpose. BuildIT uses local materials and appropriate technology in all its projects. The training programme means that when BuildIT leaves a community having completed a building project, there is a group left in the town with up to date building skills, and the ability to earn a living from these skills.

More Details
The Kaoma Community School was begun in 1998 under a tree on the existing site. Community schools are important because they provide free education to orphans and other very vulnerable children in the town, many of whom would not receive basic education otherwise.
The science and home economics rooms differ from standard classrooms in that these rooms require fixed benches, a good supply of water, sinks and safe and proper drainage for preparation and handling of chemicals and food, and additional safety features.
Water tank and waste soak-way facilities will be constructed externally and linked to the rooms. The facilities have been specifically requested by the Headmistress and Community School Committee.

Project benefits
- These facilities will ease the overcrowding in the existing school.
- They will allow the school to provide practical education in Science and Home Economics.
- 16 local women and men will be selected, trained and employed in the construction phase. At the end of the project in August 2011, they will have received a formal qualification in basic construction skills.
- The construction phase will utilise a substantial number of blocks from the Block-Making Project attached to the Cheshire Home.
- A Tile-Making project will be set-up as part of the construction phase, to supply roof tiles for the buildings. This will provide additional employment in the local community.
